Fue una líder en la historia del trabajo social y el sufragio femenino. En 1889, Addams cofundó Hull House, una de las casas de asentamiento más famosas de Estados Unidos, en Chicago, Illinois, proporcionando extensos servicios sociales a familias pobres, en gran parte inmigrantes.
