John Atherton

John Atherton (9 August 183716 May 1913) was an explorer of the Far North Queensland area of Queensland, Australia. Childhood and early life He was born in Lancashire, England and was the second son of nine children of Edmund Atherton, a yeoman farmer of Black Rod Farm, Wigan, Lancashire and his wife Esther, née Ainscough. Emigration to Australia He arrived in Sydney, at the age of 7, during 1844 on the brig Briton with his parents and his 6 siblings; James, Alice, Rebecca, Edmund, Harry and Thomas.
