John Jay fue un estadista, diplomático, firmante del Tratado de París y un Padre fundador de los Estados Unidos. Sirvió de 1789 a 1795 como el primer presidente de la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos y de 1795 a 1801 como el segundo gobernador de Nueva York. Jay dirigió la política exterior de EE. UU. durante gran parte de la década de 1780 y fue un líder importante del Partido Federalista después de la ratificación de la Constitución de los Estados Unidos en 1788.
