John Jay fue un abogado y diplomático estadounidense ante Austria-Hungría, sirviendo de 1869 a 1875. Fue hijo de William Jay y nieto de John Jay, el primer Presidente de la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos. Jay fue activo en el movimiento antiesclavista, elegido presidente de la New York Young Men's Antislavery Society mientras aún estaba en la universidad. Publicó varios discursos y panfletos sobre la esclavitud y la historia, y fue elegido en 1889 como presidente de la American Historical Association.
