John Henry Ley (1770 – 21 August 1850), fue un funcionario civil inglés que sirvió como Clerk of the House of Commons desde 1820 hasta 1850.
Early life
Era hijo de Henry Ley (1744–1824) y Mary ( Smith) Ley (1748–1834), hija de Capt. Smith de la Royal Navy. Su hermana, Mary Ley, se casó con John Greathed Harris, FRS, y su hermano menor, William Ley of Woodlands, fue Assistant Clerk of the House of Commons desde 1820 hasta 1856.
Sus abuelos paternos fueron John Ley y Grace ( Grandy) Ley (hija de Henry Grandy, de Exeter). Su familia se había establecido en Kenn durante varias generaciones y «sprung from a common ancestor with the Leys, formerly Earls of Marlborough».
Ley fue educado como King's Scholar en Westminster School, antes de ser elegido Scholar de Trinity College, Cambridge, pero «being desirous of going to Christ Church, with his contemporaries, the Westminster Students, he was entered as a Commoner of that College; he was soon after presented to a Studentship by Dr. Shafto, one of the Canons». Tras obtener su título, dejó Christ Church y «commenced his studies for the law, in the office of Mr. Abraham Moore, an eminent special pleader, where he continued for two years, and kept his terms as Student of the Middle Temple».
