Joseph Addison foi um escritor e político britânico. Ele era o filho mais velho de Lancelot Addison. Seu nome é geralmente lembrado junto ao de seu amigo de longa data Richard Steele, com quem fundou a revista The Spectator. Seu estilo de prosa simples marcou o fim dos maneirismos e das imagens clássicas convencionais do século XVII. Addison também é famoso por sua peça Cato, a Tragedy, escrita em 1712.
