Se encuentra en el mismo manuscrito que el poema heroico Beowulf y es una de las muchas versiones del relato de Holofernes y Judith tal como aparece en el Libro de Judith, una historia que aún se encuentra en las biblias católica y ortodoxa cristiana, pero que los protestantes consideran apócrifa. Existe otra versión conservada en inglés antiguo; Ælfric of Eynsham, el abad y escritor anglosajón de finales del siglo X, escribió una homilía sobre el relato.
