Toda vida eventualmente atinge um estado de morte. Muitas definições filosóficas de sistemas vivos foram propostas, como sistemas auto-organizadores. Definir a vida é ainda mais complicado por vírus, que se replicam apenas em células hospedeiras, e pela possibilidade de vida extraterrestre, que poderia ser muito diferente da vida na Terra. A vida existe por toda a Terra no ar, na água e no solo, com muitos ecossistemas formando a biosfera. Alguns desses são ambientes hostis ocupados apenas por extremófilos.
