Cardinal Cupich, Catholic groups sue Illinois to block assisted-suicide law

Cardinal Blase Cupich, two Catholic religious orders, and a rural Illinois pharmacist sued the state to block its upcoming End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act, arguing it violates their religious beliefs by obligating them to participate in or facilitate assisted suicide. The filings, supported by Becket and targeting the law before its Sept. 12 take effect, contend the measure coerces religious caregivers and would threaten their institutions’ missions, prompting multiple parallel lawsuits across state lines.
