Louis Pasteur fue un químico, farmacéutico y microbiólogo francés reconocido por sus descubrimientos de los principios de la vacunación, la fermentación microbiana y la pasteurización, esta última nombrada en su honor. Su investigación en química condujo a notables avances en la comprensión de las causas y la prevención de enfermedades, que establecieron las bases de la higiene, la salud pública y gran parte de la medicina moderna. Los trabajos de Pasteur se acreditan con haber salvado millones de vidas a través del desarrollo de vacunas contra la rabia y el ántrax. Es considerado uno de los fundadores de la bacteriología moderna y ha sido honrado como el "padre de la bacteriología" y el "padre de la microbiología".
