About Nestor

El género Nestor es uno de los dos géneros existentes de la familia de loros Strigopidae. Junto con el kākāpō y los loros extintos del género Nelepsittacus, forman la superfamilia de loros Strigopoidea. El género Nestor contiene dos especies de loros existentes de Nueva Zelanda y dos especies extintas de la Isla Norfolk, Australia y la Isla Chatham, Nueva Zelanda, respectivamente. Todas las especies son aves grandes y robustas con colas cortas y cuadradas. Una característica definitoria del género es la lengua, que tiene una punta con un fleco similar a un cabello. La semejanza superficial de esta lengua con la de los loritos ha llevado a algunos taxonomistas a considerar que los dos grupos están estrechamente relacionados, pero la evidencia de ADN muestra que no lo están.
