Not who you're looking for? Others named nigger: autobiography by comedian and social activist Dick Gregory, · labrador retriever, mascot of No. 617 Squadron · 1993 single by Clawfinger
“Thomas Dunn English...counselled union and harmony and a due regard for State rights. He recommended the Republicans to head their address not fellow-citizens, but "fellow-niggers." He said, in the course of his remarks, that we had had niggers like oysters at a feast, "fried, stewed, raw, roasted, and sometimes like w:William Page (painter)|'s 'Venus,' on the half shell."”
“I noticed that among this class of colored men the word "nigger" was freely used in about the same sense as the word "fellow," and sometimes as a term of almost endearment; but I soon learned that its use was positively and absolutely prohibited to white men.”
“Then I come down to Houston, I went to a bowling alley. I couldn't go bowling, there were no bowling balls. The people here throw 'em all in the sea, thought they were nigger eggs... thought they were nigger eggs.”
“The prosecutor, his voice trembling, added that the "N-word" was so vile he would not utter it. "It's the filthiest, dirtiest, nastiest word in the English language."”
“The nigger was calm, cool, towering, superb.”
“You are not even a nigger, you are an African.”

Nigger is a racial slur directed at Black people. References to nigger have been increasingly replaced by the euphemism "the N-word", notably in cases where nigger is mentioned but not directly used. In an instance of linguistic reappropriation, the term nigger is also used casually and fraternally among African Americans, most commonly in the form of nigga, whose spelling reflects the phonology of African-American English.
