Novalis fue un grupo de rock progresivo de los años 70 formado en Alemania. Sus álbumes más conocidos incluyen Sommerabend y Wer Schmetterlinge lachen hört. Historia de la banda El vocalista Jürgen Wentzel y el bajista Heino Schünzel publicaron un anuncio en el periódico en busca de compañeros de banda en Hamburgo en 1971. Se les unieron el organista Lutz Rahn y el baterista Hartwig Biereichel. Junto con el guitarrista Carlo Karges formaron Mosaik, y pronto cambiaron el nombre de la banda a Novalis. Después del lanzamiento de su primer álbum en 1973, Wentzel dejó el grupo y Heino Schünzel asumió las funciones vocales. Carlo Karges, quien luego se uniría a la banda de apoyo de Nena, fue reemplazado por Detlef Job. El vocalista austriaco Fred Mühlböck se unió al grupo en 1976. Las letras utilizadas en el primer álbum del grupo fueron escritas en inglés, pero a sugerencia del nuevo productor Achim Reichel, anteriormente de The Rattles, comenzaron a cantar en alemán en 1975.
