Onna of Esens was the daughter of Hero I of Esens, Stedesdorf and Wittmund and Irmgard, Countess of Oldenburg. Following the death of her brother, Balthasar I of Esens, Stedesdorf and Wittmund, in 1540, she became the heiress of the Harlingerland. Through her marriage to Otto III, Count of Rietberg, the Harlingerland passed into the possession of the Counts of Rietberg.
