El nombre "Orca" proviene de la palabra islandesa "orka", que significa "energía". Fue construida por Climeworks y es un trabajo conjunto con Carbfix, una asociación académico-industrial que ha desarrollado un enfoque novedoso para capturar CO2. La planta utiliza docenas de ventiladores grandes para extraer aire y pasarlo a través de un filtro. Luego, el filtro libera el CO2 que contiene mediante calor.
