Un huérfano es un niño cuyos padres han muerto, son desconocidos o los han abandonado de forma permanente. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, 3rd edition, define el término: "One deprived by death of father or mother, or (usu.) of both; a fatherless or motherless child." En algunos idiomas, como el sueco, el término es "parentless" y es más ambiguo en cuanto a si los padres están muertos, son desconocidos o han huido, pero típicamente se refiere a un niño o adulto joven.
