El museo es parte de KODE Art Museums and Composer Homes y fue originalmente establecido en 1887 a iniciativa de Johan Bøgh. En 1896 el museo se trasladó a un edificio de exhibición permanente, una estructura de estilo Renaissance Revival diseñada por Henry Bucher (1864–1944). El edificio se incendió durante el 1916 Bergen Fire pero fue salvado.
