Después de que su salida de la banda de rock progresivo Genesis se hiciera pública en 1975, Gabriel tomó un descanso para concentrarse en su vida familiar. En 1976, comenzó a escribir material para un álbum en solitario y conoció al productor Bob Ezrin, quien aceptó producirlo. Gabriel contrató a varios músicos adicionales, incluyendo al guitarrista Robert Fripp y al bajista Tony Levin.
