Peter Malcolm Holt, FBA (28 November 1918 – 2 November 2006) fue un historiador de Oriente Medio y Sudán. Era generalmente conocido como P. M. Holt.
Biografía
Hijo de un ministro unitario, Holt asistió a Lord Williams's School en Thame, Oxfordshire, y estudió historia en University College, Oxford. Luego obtuvo un diploma de educación y trabajó como profesor de secundaria en el Sudán anglo-egipcio de 1941 a 1953 (inicialmente en Gordon Memorial College, la principal escuela del país), y luego como archivero del gobierno y profesor a tiempo parcial en el University College of Khartoum de 1952 a 1955. Durante esos años se volvió competente en árabe.
Holt completó un doctorado en Oxford sobre “The personal rule of the Khalifa Abdallahi al-Ta'aishi”, sobre el segundo gobernante del Estado mahdista sudanés (1885-1899), inicialmente bajo la supervisión de H.A.R. Gibb. Enseñó en SOAS, University of London como profesor de 1955 a 1982, luego como Reader, luego como profesor de Historia árabe y finalmente como profesor de Oriente Próximo y Medio de 1975 a 1982.
Investigación
Holt fue el historiador preeminente de Sudán. Su primer libro, The Mahdist State in the Sudan 1881–1898. A Study of its Origins, Development, and Overthrow (1958) se basó en su tesis doctoral, y fue seguido por A modern history of the Sudan, from the Funj Sultanate to the present day (1965, luego republicado como The history of the Sudan from the coming of Islam to the present day). Luego amplió sus intereses geográficamente, publicando Egypt and the Fertile Crescent 1516-1922, A Political History en 1966). Luego añadió un segundo campo, convirtiéndose en una autoridad sobre el Sultanato mameluco (1250-1517), publicando The memoirs of a Syrian prince: Abu'l-Fidā, Sultan of Ḥamāh (672-732) (1983) y Early Mamluk diplomacy (1260 - 1290): Treaties of Baybars and Qalāwūn with Christian rulers (1995).
