En las artes, un retrato puede representarse como medio cuerpo e incluso cuerpo completo. Si el sujeto en cuerpo completo representa mejor la personalidad y el estado de ánimo, se puede elegir este tipo de presentación. La intención es mostrar el parecido, la personalidad e incluso el estado de ánimo de la persona. Por esta razón, en fotografía un retrato generalmente no es una instantánea, sino una imagen compuesta de una persona en una posición estática. A menudo un retrato muestra a una persona mirando directamente al pintor o fotógrafo, para involucrar al sujeto con el espectador de la manera más efectiva, pero el retrato puede representarse como perfil y tres cuartos.
