Tras mostrar promesa como potranco de dos años en 1868, mejoró para convertirse en un competidor de primer nivel a principios del año siguiente. Ganó las 2000 Guineas en Newmarket y The Derby. Pretender fue el último caballo entrenado en el norte de Inglaterra en ganar el Derby hasta Dante en 1945; ningún otro lo ha ganado desde entonces. Pretender no completó la Triple Corona cuando fue derrotado en el St Leger en Doncaster. La forma de Pretender se deterioró posteriormente y no logró registrar victorias significativas a pesar de permanecer en entrenamiento durante dos temporadas más. No causó impresión como semental.
