Una prisión, también conocida como cárcel, gaol, penitenciaría, centro de detención, centro de corrección, instalación correccional o centro de remisión, es una instalación donde las personas son encarceladas bajo la autoridad del estado, usualmente como castigo por varios crímenes. También pueden usarse para albergar a aquellos que esperan juicio. Las prisiones cumplen dos funciones principales dentro del sistema de justicia penal: retener a las personas acusadas de crímenes mientras esperan juicio, y confinar a aquellos que han declarado culpables o han sido condenados para cumplir sus sentencias.
