El Ramayana, también conocido como el Valmiki Ramayana, según se atribuye tradicionalmente a Valmiki, es un poema épico hindú smriti de la antigua India. Es una de las dos epopeyas importantes del hinduismo conocidas como los Itihasas, siendo la otra el Mahabharata, narraciones de eventos pasados, intercaladas con enseñanzas sobre los objetivos de la vida humana. La epopeya narra la vida y el viaje de Rama, el séptimo avatar de la deidad hindú Vishnu, quien fue el príncipe de Ayodhya. Es una de las epopeyas antiguas más grandes de la literatura mundial y consta de casi 24.000 shlokas (versos), divididos en siete kāṇḍa (capítulos), donde cada shloka es un pareado.
