Critical reception
Trouser Press wrote that the album "explores the first album's ingenuousness in greater depth with thought-provoking results... Though young love remains the theme, tension has replaced cuteness." Neil Tennant of Smash Hits gave the album an 8 out of 10 and wrote that "no one can accuse them of being twee anymore ... a big step forward which they can be proud of and you can enjoy."
