Phoenix cresceu em uma família itinerante, como o irmão mais velho de Rain Phoenix, Joaquin Phoenix, Liberty Phoenix e Summer Phoenix. Ele não teve educação formal, mas demonstrou um talento instintivo para o violão. Iniciou sua carreira de ator aos 10 anos em comerciais de televisão. Estrelou o filme de aventura de ficção científica Explorers (1985) e teve seu primeiro papel notável em Stand by Me (1986), um filme de formação baseado na novela The Body, de Stephen King.
