Sirvió como el primer primer ministro del país de 1980 a 1987 y como su segundo presidente de 1987 a 2017. También lideró la Unión Nacional Africana de Zimbabue (ZANU) de 1975 a 1980 y luego su partido político sucesor, la ZANU – Frente Patriótico (ZANU–PF), de 1980 a 2017.
