Desde 1994, ele é professor pesquisador no Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre (SGDP), um departamento do Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience no King’s College London. Plomin é amplamente reconhecido como uma figura influente na ciência comportamental, particularmente por sua liderança no Twins Early Development Study (TEDS) e por avançar o uso da genética molecular na psicologia. Uma pesquisa da Review of General Psychology, publicada em 2002, classificou Plomin como o 71º psicólogo mais citado do século XX. Ele é autor de vários livros sobre genética e psicologia.
