En criptografía, una sal es datos aleatorios suministrados como una entrada adicional a una función unidireccional que hashea datos, una contraseña o frase de paso. La adición de sal ayuda a defenderse contra ataques que usan tablas precomputadas, al aumentar enormemente el tamaño de la tabla necesaria para un ataque exitoso. También ayuda a proteger contraseñas que ocurren múltiples veces en una base de datos, ya que se usa una nueva sal para cada instancia de contraseña. Además, la adición de sal no impone ninguna carga a los usuarios.
