Ela fica na antiga rodovia principal que leva de Amman a Jerusalém. Situada no planalto de Balqa, cerca de 790–1,100 metres acima do nível do mar, a cidade é construída na curva de três colinas, próxima ao Vale do Jordão. Uma das três colinas, Jabal al-Qal'a, é o local de uma fortaleza arruinada do século XIII. É a capital da Governadoria de Balqa da Jordânia.
