Seine-et-Marne is a mainly rural department in the Île-de-France region in northern France. Named after the rivers Seine and Marne, it roughly encompasses the region's eastern half, and, at 5,915 km2 (2,284 sq mi), is the largest department in Île-de-France by area. In 2023, it had a population of 1,468,108. Its prefecture is Melun, although both Meaux and Chelles have larger populations.
