Shamash, también conocido como Utu, era el antiguo dios del sol mesopotámico. Se creía que veía todo lo que sucedía en el mundo cada día, y por lo tanto era responsable de la justicia y la protección de los viajeros. Como juez divino, podía asociarse con el inframundo. Además, podía servir como el dios de la adivinación, típicamente junto al dios del clima Adad. Aunque era universalmente considerado uno de los dioses principales, era particularmente venerado en Sippar y Larsa. El dios de la luna Nanna (Sin) y su esposa Ningal eran considerados sus padres, mientras que su hermana gemela era Inanna (Ishtar). Ocasionalmente otras diosas, como Manzat y Pinikir, podían ser consideradas sus hermanas también. La diosa del alba Aya (Sherida) era su esposa, y múltiples textos describen sus reuniones diarias que tenían lugar en una montaña donde se creía que el sol se ponía. Entre sus hijos estaban Kittum, la personificación de la verdad, deidades de los sueños como Mamu, así como el dios Ishum. El nombre de Utu podía usarse para escribir los nombres de muchas deidades solares extranjeras logográficamente. La conexión entre él y el dios solar hurrita Shimige está particularmente bien atestiguada, y este último podía asociarse con Aya también.
