Shamash, também conhecido como Utu, era o antigo deus do sol mesopotâmico. Acreditava-se que ele via tudo o que acontecia no mundo todos os dias, e portanto era responsável pela justiça e proteção dos viajantes. Como juiz divino, ele poderia ser associado ao submundo. Além disso, ele poderia servir como o deus da adivinhação, tipicamente ao lado do deus do clima Adad. Embora fosse universalmente considerado um dos deuses principais, ele era particularmente venerado em Sippar e Larsa. O deus da lua Nanna (Sin) e sua esposa Ningal eram considerados seus pais, enquanto sua irmã gêmea era Inanna (Ishtar).
