Bangladesh tribunal keeps three journalists jailed awaiting trial

Bangladesh’s special tribunals have kept three journalists—Shyamal Dutta, Mozammel Babu, and Farzana Rupa—jailed awaiting trial in a crimes-against-humanity case linked to the 2024 Hasina uprising, with prosecutors alleging they incited suppression during protests triggered by Hasina’s press conference. Rights groups and the Commonwealth Journalists Association criticized the move as entrenching press repression and warned it criminalizes reporting; the journalists’ families say they are being held illegally and question the evidence.
