El término sin se origina del inglés antiguo synn, remontándose a raíces protogermánicas y protoindoeuropeas que significan "ser" o "verdaderamente culpable", implicando un juicio de conducta incorrecta. Con el tiempo, diferentes religiones y culturas desarrollaron entendimientos distintos del pecado, a menudo moldeando marcos morales y prácticas espirituales. Cada cultura tiene su propia interpretación de lo que significa cometer un pecado. Aunque los pecados se consideran generalmente acciones, cualquier pensamiento, palabra o acto considerado inmoral, amoral, egoísta, vergonzoso, dañino o alienante podría denominarse "pecaminoso".
