Brilhando através de aberturas em nuvens ou entre outros objetos como montanhas e edifícios, esses feixes de luz solar espalhada por partículas são essencialmente eixos paralelos separados por volumes sombreados mais escuros. Sua convergência aparente no céu é uma ilusão visual da perspectiva linear. A mesma ilusão causa a convergência aparente de linhas paralelas em uma longa estrada reta ou corredor em um ponto de fuga distante. As partículas de espalhamento que tornam a luz solar visível podem ser moléculas de ar ou particulados.
