La banda fue fundada por el bajista John Wetton y el baterista Bill Bruford, anteriormente la sección rítmica de King Crimson. La banda se completó con el violinista/tecladista Eddie Jobson y el guitarrista Allan Holdsworth. Bruford y Holdsworth se fueron en 1978, y Bruford fue reemplazado por el baterista Terry Bozzio. Jobson, Wetton y Bozzio reformaron U.K. para una gira mundial en 2012.
