White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump is officially a card-carrying member of the Republican party.

Trump —the daughter of President Donald Trump— shared her reaction to the official switch. She had made the changes to the registration on Oct. 22, 2018.

“I am a proud Trump Republican,” she said during an interview with The New York Times on Monday. “I believe he’s broadened the reach of the Republican Party, which is really important to me.”

Ivanka Trump admitted that she made the decision to change political parties in order to vote for her father in the upcoming New York primary.

Prior to the election of 2016, Trump was documented as a registered Democrat and then, an Independent. At the time, she also defended her political stance.

In 2016, neither she nor her brother, Eric Trump, were able to vote for their father in the New York primary. New York requires voters to be registered under the political party of the candidate they desire to vote for.

“I’m an independent, and I’ve always voted based on the candidate, as opposed to based on the party. And it was actually a very interesting experience,” she said in 2016.

Ivanka Trump went on to share her opinion of the New York voting laws.

“New York has one of the most onerous rules in terms of registration, and it required us to register a long time ago, almost — close to a year ago. And we didn’t do that. We found out about it sort of after the fact,” Ivanka Trump continued.

Following Ivanka Trump’s announcement, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders took to Twitter to show gratitude for “all the sacrifices” she’s made for the Trump administration.

Huckabee tweeted, “Proud of my friend [Ivanka Trump] for all the sacrifices she’s made to serve in the administration and be a force for positive change in America and across the globe.”
