President Donald Trump says he would “certainly consider” giving his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, a post in his administration.

“I think he’s a fine man. I think it’s terrible what they did to him,” Trump said when asked if he would consider giving Flynn a spot in the administration on Thursday.

“I would certainly consider it, yeah I would, I think he’s a fine man,” Trump said, adding, “They did everything possible to destroy him.”

Earlier on Thursday, Trump said that he believed Flynn was “tormented” by “dirty cops,” which raised speculation that the president may pardon him.

However, speaking to reporters on Thursday night, Trump said, “It looks to me like Michael Flynn would be exonerated based on everything I see.”

He added, “But I don’t know that anyone would have to use that power. I think he’s exonerated. I’ve never seen anything like it. What they did. What they wrote. … It’s just disgraceful.”

Trump’s comments come after recently released documents raised new questions about the case against Flynn who pleaded guilty to making false statements in 2017.

On Wednesday, a trove of documents showed that the FBI considered trying to get Flynn to lie so that “we can prosecute him or get him fired.” Additionally, they reportedly mulled trying to get Flynn to “admit to breaking the Logan Act.”

And documents released on Thursday showed that the FBI was ready to end its investigation of Flynn nearly three weeks before the interview where he was accused of making false statements to FBI agents, as IJR reported.

Flynn was fired from his position in 2017 after it was reported that he spoke to the Russian ambassador about sanctions, contrary to what he told Vice President Mike Pence.

Speaking to reporters about the newly released documents, Pence said, “I’m deeply troubled by the revelations of what appears to have been investigative abuse by officials in the Justice Department, and we are going to continue to look into that very carefully.”

When asked if he believed it was appropriate for Flynn to have been fired, Pence said, “I know what Gen. Flynn told me and I’m more inclined to believe it was unintentional than ever before.”
