A shocking act of violence inside a Southern California home has left a respected teacher dead and her daughter — a mental health advocate with ties to former President Joe Biden — recovering in the hospital.
According to the New York Post, police say Sergio Fraire, 30, has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of Arti Varma and her daughter, Meera Varma, at their home in Burbank.
Fraire is charged with murder and attempted murder. Authorities allege he stabbed both victims during the attack. Arti Varma later died from her injuries, while Meera Varma survived and remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The arrest came after what officials described as a detailed investigation.
“Investigators conducted a comprehensive investigation, which included interviewing witnesses, canvassing for evidence, and collecting and reviewing surveillance video,” police said.
“Through the investigation, detectives identified 30-year-old Sergio Fraire as a person of interest.”
A SWAT team executed a search warrant at a residence about two miles from the crime scene, where Fraire was taken into custody without incident. Investigators said evidence was recovered at the location.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Meera Varma, who has been active in mental health advocacy and has worked on related initiatives connected to Biden, has previously spoken openly about her personal struggles.
“We may think that we have six degrees of separation between ourselves and a person who has been affected by suicide,” she said.
“But I can guarantee that you all have only one degree of separation between yourself and a person who almost died by suicide. And that someone is me.”
She also spoke about the close bond she shared with her mother.
“My mom squeezed me even tighter, looked me directly in the eyes, and said, ‘I love you. I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m here,” she said.
Arti Varma worked as a second-grade teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School and was remembered by friends as a dedicated educator and a positive presence in her community.
“She was an amazing teacher, and she loved being a teacher,” her friend Cristina Strattan said. “She was such a bright light. She was always so joyful, so proud of her kids.”
Her death has deeply affected the school community, where she is the second teacher to be killed in recent years.
Officials said Meera’s father and Arti’s husband were in India at the time of the attack.
As investigators continue working to determine what led to the violence, the case has left the community mourning and searching for answers.
