First lady Jill Biden is paying a visit to National Guard troops stationed outside of the U.S. Capitol to thank them for keeping her and her family safe during her husband’s inauguration.

“I just wanted to come today to say thank you to all of you for keeping me and my family safe and I know that you’ve left your home states. The Bidens are a National Guard family. Our son Beau was Delaware Army National Guard. He served for a year in Iraq in 2008 and 2009,” Jill Biden said.

She added, “I just wanted to say thank you from President Biden and from the entire Biden family. So the White House baked you some chocolate chip cookies. I can’t say that I baked them all myself.”

Jill Biden told the troops the National Guard “will always hold a special place in the heart of all the Bidens.”

In her first video posted to the @FLOTUS Twitter account Thursday, Jill Biden celebrated the success of the inauguration and those who helped keep it safe, as IJR reported.

“It was a culmination of thousands of people working together to create something incredible. Especially, in this uniquely difficult year,” she said.

The first lady continued, “As a National Guard mom, I’m grateful for our service members, first responders, civil servants who have put in hours upon hours of work to make sure that our inauguration was a reflection of the pride and promise of our nation. I’m grateful for the families who supported them and I’m grateful for everyone who calls this city home who made us feel so welcome.”

Joe Biden’s inauguration came just two weeks after rioters stormed the Capitol. His speech was focused heavily on unity and ending the “uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal,” as IJR reported.

Joe Biden told Americans, “We can do this – if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts.”
