Former President Donald Trump is firing back at New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) after her office announced the investigation into his organization “is no longer purely civil.”

“There is nothing more corrupt than an investigation that is in desperate search of a crime. But, make no mistake, that is exactly what is happening here. The Attorney General of New York literally campaigned on prosecuting Donald Trump even before she knew anything about me,” the former president said in a statement on his website.

He argued, “This is something that happens in failed third world countries, not the United States.”

Trump continued, “If you can run for a prosecutor’s office pledging to take out your enemies, and be elected to that job by partisan voters who wish to enact political retribution, then we are no longer a free constitutional democracy.”

Accusing Democrats of wanting to “cancel the Make America Great Again movement,” Trump added, “No President has been treated the way I have. With all of the crime and corruption you read about with others, nothing happens, they only go after Donald Trump.”

After calling the move “a very sad and dangerous tale for our Country,” Trump vowed, “We will overcome together.”

He explained, “I have built a great company, employed thousands of people, and all I do is get unfairly attacked and abused by a corrupt political system.”

James released a statement on Tuesday with more updates on the investigation, as IJR reported.

“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the Organization is no longer purely civil in nature. We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA. We have no additional comment,” the statement reads.
