Former Vice President Mike Pence seemingly took a swipe at former President Donald Trump for his claims about overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election.

During a Thursday speech at Ronald Reagan Library, Pence revisited the events on January 6.

“Now, there are those in our party, who believed that in my position as presiding officer over the joint session that I possess the authority to reject or return electoral votes, certified by the states,” Pence said.

Pence appeared to reference Trump’s criticism of him after he refused to overturn the election results, which he did not have the power to do.

“Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify,” the former president tweeted.

Pence added, “But the Constitution provides the vice president with no such authority.”

He explained, “There is almost no idea more un-American than the notion that any, one person could choose the American president.”

Pence also said, “I will always be proud that we did our part on that tragic day to reconvene the Congress and fulfilled our duty under the Constitution and the laws of the United States.”

During a speech earlier this month, Pence said he and Trump have spoken several times since leaving office, as IJR reported.

Still, the former vice president said he did not know if they would “ever see eye to eye” on January 6.

Pence continued to receive criticism for his actions on January 6 during the Faith & Freedom Coalition summit last week as hecklers began chanting “traitor,” as IJR reported.
