Former Missouri Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill is sharing how her family will be celebrating Independence Day moving forward, and it involves footage of the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“We’re going to start a new family tradition in my family. On the Fourth of July and every Fourth of July going forward, we’re going to watch that video that The New York Times put together of January 6,” McCaskill said during an interview with MSNBC on Friday.

During the show earlier on, McCaskill reflected on the investigations led by Republicans of the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack and compared it to the insurrection.

“I don’t want to minimize the loss of life in Benghazi, or the problems around the security of those locations…but let’s compare and contrast those two events, and which is more foundation-shaking to our democracy…Americans were beating police officers at the heart of our government,” McCaskill explained.

She continued, “It is astounding to me that these same people who pounded the podium for years on Benghazi…are now saying, ‘What? No, we don’t need to look at this. Let’s move along.'”

The former senator’s comments come just one day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) named her appointments to a select committee to investigate the riot, as IJR reported.

“It had been our hope to establish a bipartisan, independent National Commission, but there is no prospect for that Commission at this time,” Pelosi said in a statement on Thursday.

She added, “Yesterday, the House established the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol. Today, I am proud to name Members who will patriotically honor our oath and our responsibility to the American people: to seek the truth.”

The committee includes Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), as chairman, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Texas), Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.), Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), and Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.).

Cheney said in a statement she is “honored to have been named to serve on the January 6th select committee.”
