A Democratic lawmaker is sharing that the select committee investigation January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol will likely issue “quite a few subpoenas.”

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who is the chair of the select committee, was met with questions from reporters following a meeting with the select committee. He told one reporter the committee will be issuing subpoenas “soon.”

When asked if the committee discussed who they will subpoena, Thompson replied, “No, well, you know it’s early.”

Another reporter asked Thompson if he expects dozens of subpoenas. He responded, “They’ll be quite a few.”

After meeting with Jan. 6 committee, Thompson told us that the panel would send "quite a few" subpoenas soon, but he declined to specify when they would be issued or who would be targeted.

The chair of the select committee was also asked about the recent decision made by the Justice Department to allow former Trump administration officials to testify to committees investigating his efforts to overturn the election results and the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“I appreciate DOJ’s position on it and it makes the work on the committee that much easier,” Thompson said.

Last week, Thompson told the Guardian he is prepared to depose lawmakers and senior officials from the Trump administration who may have had involvement with the attack, as IJR reported.

Thompson said he “absolutely” intends to pursue a wide-ranging inquiry against Trump and some of his most prominent Capitol Hill allies.

He added, “Nothing is off limits.” While making his comments to the outlet, Thompson also said it is necessary to examine who spoke to Trump that day.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) confirmed he spoke with Trump on January 6, as IJR reported.

During an interview with Spectrum News on Thursday, Jordan told reporter Taylor Popielarz, “Yeah, I mean – I spoke with the president last week, I speak with the president all of the time. I spoke with him on January 6. I mean, I talked with President Trump all the time, and that’s…I don’t think that’s unusual.”

He continued, “I would expect, members of Congress, to talk with the President of the United States when they’re trying to get done the things they told the voters in their district to do.”
