Some Republicans have appeared to gain more followers on Twitter after Tesla CEO’s Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform.
According to NBC News, it was reported that high-profile Twitter accounts had been losing thousands of followers after news of the acquisition broke.
Still, some Republicans’ accounts saw a spike in followers.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who had 539,000 followers the day before Musk’s takeover was announced, had 632,000 by Tuesday evening, as NBC News reported.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) celebrated the increases in followers, tweeting, “It really is something how conservative accounts are getting massive follower increases today….”

The Washington Examiner noted user statistical reports show Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) garnered more than 211,000 followers while Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) saw a spike of more than 102,000.
Others experienced a loss of followers, including former President Barack Obama who lost more than 300,000 followers after the announcement.
NBC News reported Twitter did not provide an exact number of accounts that were closed or activated after the announcement.
“While we continue to take action on accounts that violate our spam policy which can affect follower counts, these fluctuations appear to largely be a result of an increase in new account creation and deactivation,” Twitter said in a statement.
A spokesperson at the social media company said the accounts that experienced the highest drop in followers were “high-profile accounts.”
On Monday, Twitter’s board accepted Musk’s offer to buy the company for roughly $44 billion, as IJR reported.
Bret Taylor, Twitter’s Independent Board Chair, said, “The Twitter Board conducted a thoughtful and comprehensive process to assess Elon’s proposal with a deliberate focus on value, certainty, and financing.”
He added, “The proposed transaction will deliver a substantial cash premium, and we believe it is the best path forward for Twitter’s stockholders.”
Musk explained he wants to “make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.”
