The head of an abortion advocacy agency told a Republican lawmaker that she believes men can get pregnant and have abortions.

During a hearing on abortion access on Wednesday, Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) asked Avow Executive Director Aimee Arrambide, “What do you say a woman is?”

“I believe that everyone can identify for themselves,” she responded.

Bishop then asked, “Do you believe then that men can become pregnant and have abortions?”

“Yes,” Arrambide responded.

Earlier this month, Politico published a report based on a leaked draft of an opinion that appeared to indicate the Supreme Court would overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) was roasted earlier this month after he implied that men cannot get pregnant while railing against the draft opinion, as IJR reported.

“Your body, your choice, it’s a hell of a moment to live in,” he said in a video posted on Twitter. “We will not be defeated. We will stand tall, we will stand firm, and we will affirm the constitutional — currently constitutionally-protected rights — of women and girls.”

In the tweet’s caption, he wrote, “If men could get pregnant, this wouldn’t even be a conversation. This decision isn’t about strengthening families – it’s about extremism. It’s about control.”

Bishop’s first question for Arrambide on Wednesday appeared to be a reference to a viral moment from Supreme Court Justice-designate Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing in March.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) asked Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, “Can you provide a definition for the word ‘woman’?”

“Can I provide a definition?” Jackson asked.

When Blackburn confirmed that was her question, Jackson said, “I can’t.”

“You can’t?” the senator asked.

Jackson explained, “Not in this context I’m not a biologist.”
