ABC’s “Good Morning America” made a significant mistake in a tweet reporting on Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s swearing-in ceremony.
“Ketanji Brown Jackson is sworn in as the first Black Supreme Court justice in U.S. history,” the show’s Twitter account read.
The show’s YouTube channel made the same statement.

On both its Twitter account (@GMA) and YouTube channel, they've determined Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas aren't Black and thus Ketanji Brown Jackson is actually the first Black person on the Supreme Court pic.twitter.com/1fevooDk9Z
It took almost five hours for the show to delete the tweet an issue a correction.
“Video shows Ketanji Brown Jackson sworn in as the first Black female Supreme Court justice in U.S. history,” the show tweeted.
The tweet continues, “A previous tweet erroneously stated Jackson is the first Black Supreme Court justice.”

Still, critics were quick to drag the show for the error.

Fox News pointed out Jackson was sworn in as the third Black person to serve on the court.
Thurgood Marshall was the first Black person sworn in to serve on the court from 1967 to 1991.
Clarence Thomas is the second Black justice.
The error comes just months after Politico issued a correction after making the same mistake, as IJR previously reported.
Politico first reported that “Ketanji Brown Jackson will likely be confirmed as the first Black Supreme Court justice by the end of the week.”
The outlet later issued a correction, saying, “Ketanji Brown Jackson will likely be confirmed as the first Black female Supreme Court justice by the end of this week.”
The correction continued, “For the record: This replaces an earlier tweet that stated Ketanji Brown Jackson could be the first Black Supreme Court justice, it should have said the first Black female Supreme Court justice. We apologize for the error.”
Jackson was sworn in on Thursday as the 116th Supreme Court justice and the first Black woman to serve on the court.
She replaced Justice Stephen Breyer who has officially retired.
