Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) blasted Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) after he declared men cannot get pregnant.
During a House hearing Thursday, Clyde asked Dr. Bhavik Kumar, medical director for primary and trans care at Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, “Can biological men become pregnant and give birth?”
He replied, “Men can have pregnancies, especially trans men.”

Kumar continued, “Somebody with a uterus may have the capability of becoming pregnant, whether they’re a woman or a man. That doesn’t make a difference.”
Clyde responded, “OK, we’re done.”
According to Kumar, “Not every person with a uterus has the ability to become pregnant. This is medicine.”
Clyde explained, “I can’t believe it’s necessary to say this, but men cannot get pregnant and cannot give birth, regardless of how they identify themselves.”
He added, “Why in the world would Democrats have brought in a person whose title is ‘director of trans care’ for an abortion hearing when only biological women can become pregnant?”
Additionally, Clyde questioned another witness about whether a fetal heartbeat can be heard after six weeks of pregnancy.
Dr. Nisha Verma, a fellow at Physicians for Reproductive Health, said, “I’d love to answer your question but like so many things in medicine, it’s complex.”
She continued, “I’d love to answer your question, I need a little bit of time to do so.”
Ocasio-Cortez slammed Clyde for his comments.
“The same folks who … told us that COVID’s just a flu, that climate change isn’t real, that January 6 was nothing but a tourist visit … are now trying to tell us that transgender people are not real,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She continued, “And I would say that their claim is probably just as legitimate as all their others, which is to say not very much at all.”

The comments come just after Democratic Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams sparked backlash for claiming “there is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks,” as IJR reported.
