A mom made a startling discovery after examining her children’s Halloween candy.

It was reported that a woman named Tiffany Burroughs took her three young sons to a trunk or treat Halloween event over the weekend.

Fox 19 Now noted the boys were one, two and five years old.

“They loved going, dressing up in their costumes,” Burroughs said.

According to the report, the event was held at JJ’s Restaurant in St. Charles, Missouri.

As her sons were collecting their candy, Burroughs reportedly noticed an “unusual package of gummy worms.”

Burroughs explained she “remembered it when we walked through the door, and I said,’ oh yeah, let me see that.’ I looked at it and was like, ‘oh yeah, that’s definitely not for kids.”

The package had “Delta 88 THC” printed on it.

After discovering the cannabis product, Burroughs called the police and officers told the restaurant about the matter.

Co-owner Stephen Bell said, “Me and the manager and the other owner walked through the lot. I mean we looked through everyone’s candy, and we couldn’t find anything.”

Police believed the incident was an accident as they searched through the candy and did not find any other packages of the cannabis product, as Fox 19 Now reported.

“We don’t believe at this time there was malicious intent. That somehow these gummy worms got mixed in with candy because they do look like candy,” Lt. Tom Wilkison of the St. Charles Police Department said.

Burroughs later added, “We will always be checking candy now. Not going to let anything slide.”

Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued Halloween food safety tips for parents.

“Tell children not to accept – and especially not to eat – anything that isn’t commercially wrapped. Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious,” the FDA stated.
