ProPublica reporter Alec MacGillis failed on Twitter after bringing up a decades-old story about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

Over the weekend, he shared a story written by Joshua Chaffin of the Financial Times titled, “Ron DeSantis is Donald Trump with brains and without the drama.”

MacGillis tweeted, “Yikes: “According to a friend, DeSantis would tell dates he liked Thai food, but pronounced it ‘thigh.’ If they corrected him, Finch wrote, he would find an excuse to leave. ‘He didn’t want a girlfriend who corrected him.'”

Twitter users appeared to find it ridiculous that the reporter found the story concerning.

One user tweeted, “*This* is what they are slinging at DeSantis? Pathetic. Also, no one wants a boyfriend or girlfriend who corrects them, and if they do it on the first date it’s a really bad sign.”

Another wrote, “What are you in high school? LOL!!! This seems like high school girl gossip!!!! ‘Oh he left them because they corrected him…’ Blah blah blah. Geesh you people have no scruples.”

I heard DeSantis cuts the tags off mattresses…

Including ones he doesn't own. https://t.co/uXfvgkYQHP

I mean.
Biden hung out with segregationists and Harris kept innocent men in prison to advance her career, but this is bad too.
I guess. https://t.co/HKqdFY20iI

It’s over guys. DeSantis is done.

How pathetic are these idiots? They have been working overtime since 2018 to find dirt on the governor, and this is the worst they could come up with. ??? https://t.co/l6QRtg9A5L

An ABC News/Ipsos poll published Sunday found 64% of registered Republicans believe former President Donald Trump should have a “great deal or good amount of influence” on the future of the party.

However, 72%, believe the same about DeSantis.

Forty-seven percent say DeSantis should have “a great deal” of influence on the party.

The poll was conducted from October 21 to October 22.

FiveThirtyEight shows DeSantis holds a 7.7 point lead over his Democratic opponent Charlie Crist.

The governor and Crist will battle Monday evening during the first and only debate of the race.

As Politico notes, this may “mark one of the few times this campaign that DeSantis gives any extended comments about his opponent, who once was governor.”
